When you write May 20th in numbers, it’s written 5.20. Pronounce the numbers 5-2-0 in Chinese (五二零 wǔ èr líng). You will find that they sound very close to the words 我爱你 wǒ ài nǐ.

520 originally started as an internet slang word used by the Chinese as a shortcut to say I love you. Similarly to saying ILY in English. People then associate this number with the date of May 20th (5.20). That, ladies and gentlemen, is how this day appeared as a very romantic day in this modern era!

Bouquets that are normally RMB260 (about RM158) could even be priced up to RMB300 (about RM182).


Lovebirds in Shanghai start lining up as early as 6am on every 20th May at the court of marriage registry even when it opens its gates at 8am.



Large companies also join in the local unofficial celebration of 520 by putting their consumers in the mood of love with 520 themed digital marketing campaigns on WeChat moments ads.
